Hello! I'm Dr. Paul Bekkum from All Seasons Full Body Chiropractic Center in Fargo, North Dakota and today I want to share with you some options on how to resolve your Peripheral Neuropathy with natural and effective solutions.
Peripheral Neuropathy is becoming an epidemic in the United States. If you have been told that you are suffering from Neuropathy, you are not alone. People suffer from this condition for a number of reasons and the symptoms vary.
Some of those symptoms include:
- Numbness and tingling in the extremities;
- Pain and stiffness;
- Pins and needle sensations in their arms and legs;
- Sensitivity to touch (even just with running your fingernails over the skin);
- Prickly sensations;
- Hot and/or searing pain;
- Lack of coordination; and
- Pulsing or throbbing pain.
Some of the risk factors that can lead to Peripheral Neuropathy include:
- Autoimmune diseases;
- Exposures to toxins;
- Bodily traumas (motor vehicle collisions, sports injuries, slip and falls on the ice, etc.);
- Facial nerve problems; and
- Multiple sclerosis.
This is just a few of the most common risk factors.
The good news is that our body can actually produce natural pain relievers when we are injured. Sometimes those initial risk factors can trigger our body's natural reaction which is to produce some natural opioids, or endorphins. A good example of this would be auto accidents. Typically, the first hours or days following an accident (depending on the individual and the severity of the accident), an individual is in less pain. This is our natural endorphins or natural opioids that are kicking in to shut off the pain receptors in our bodies. When those natural endorphins subside, our body begins to feel the affects of our injuries. At this time, our body starts to respond according to the severity of the injury to send us a message the injury is present.
The good news is there are things people can do at home to help minimize the effects of Peripheral Neuropathy and reduce the effects of chronic pain.
Some home remedies include:
- High intensity exercises that get your heart rate up (if you are able);
- Soaking in a cold pool, tub or shower (helps to numb the areas that are inflamed);
- Social Interaction (personal connection naturally releases the natural painkillers our own body produce);
- Sitting in the Sun;
- Adequate Sleep (our body needs to shut down and repair itself);
- Magnesium supplement (helps to reduce pain).
Probiotics also help. Peripheral Neuropathy is an inflammatory disease sometimes caused by improper gut flora. It's important not to purchase just any Probiotic off the shelf. If you notice that you are having digestive problems in addition to your Neuropathy symptoms, getting your digestive tract back in order will reduce the symptoms of Neuropathy. If this is true for you, Probiotics are a must. Our office partners with Nutrametrix which offers high grade probiotics and digestive enzymes if you are looking for a trustworthy brand.
All Seasons Full Body Chiropractic handles Peripheral Neuropathy symptoms with a three-pronged approach. Our first segment of treatment is our K-Laser Therapy. K-Laser Therapy is scientifically proven to be 90% effective in treating Neuropathy. It also enhances Neurite Outgrowth so that you can get normal sensation back again.
Most of the medications that you're taking are just there to help decrease the sensations that you're feeling. They are only numbing the pain. They're not helping your body heal the injury or problem.
The K-Laser Therapy also helps to increase blood flow and provide pain relief. The light therapy within the K-Laser stimulates the mitochondria in the cells so they can produce the energy that your body needs to heal itself. This helps improve functional recovery so you'll see increased range of motion, decreased pain and increased muscle function and strength. those are all things that we test in the office just to find out even if you have the problem in the first place.
Generally, the recommended K-Laser treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy is going to be 12 treatments in the first month. The treatments can range anywhere from about 15 minutes to half an hour. After that first month, it's roughly four treatments a month thereafter depending on the severity of the person's condition.
Treatments are always adjusted according to how you're healing not necessarily how you're feeling so we'll be measuring things along the way and you'll be able to see the results for yourself to know that we're headed in the right direction.
The second segment in our 3 part Peripheral Neuropathy treatment protocol is our A3 Vibration Therapy. This therapy stimulates the nerve endings as well as increases muscle strength and blood flow to the body. It does so by stimulating all the muscles and tissues to begin working together.
If you have long-standing Peripheral Neuropathy, we can get your body back to functioning more effectively and less reactive to pain, numbness and tingling or burning sensations that you've been experiencing. A3 Vibration Therapy increases oxygen and nutrients to the tissues encouraging healing in the affected areas where you have some damage. This therapy stimulates all the muscles and tendons so they can function correctly again.
The last segment in our Peripheral Neuropathy treatment protocol helps to increase blood flow in the body by up to 30% especially in the arterioles which are the smallest arteries in our body. Our Bemer Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy takes 8 minutes. A video on our website shows what the treatment looks like.
After the PEMF therapy, the blood flow improves markedly increasing circulation to all areas of your body helping to increase oxygen flow to all your tissues and getting nutrients out to all your cells so they can heal properly.
