Does Your Child Have Text Neck?
There is an epidemic surfacing in this country and it's something called Tech Neck or Text Neck. You guessed it. It's caused by looking down at your digital device whether it be your smartphone, tablet or computer screen for too long and it's rampant in our culture today. It is causing untold suffering and it's something our culture needs to be aware of as we navigate through the Information Age.
In most households, what is going on today is that many of us, including our children, are watching movies, playing interactive games and texting our friends and family right from our smartphones. 58 percent of children ages 8-12 have a cellphone and 38 percent of children under the age of 2 are already using a mobile device to view media. Children's bones are very soft. It takes about 15 years for the spine to fully develop and mature. The early ages are a critical time for spine health as the posture our kids maintain now, will define their spinal health as adults.

Correct posture is an important way to maintain health in the many intricate structures in the back and spine. Good posture and back support are critical when it comes to avoiding back and neck injuries and pain. Not maintaining good posture and adequate back support can add strain to muscles and put stress on the spine. Over time, the stress of poor posture can change the anatomical characteristics of the spine, leading to the possibility of constricted blood vessels and nerves, as well as problems with muscles, discs, and joints. All of these can be major contributors to back and neck pain, as well as headaches, fatigue, and possibly even concerns with major organs and breathing.
Every little bit our head moves forward, dramatically increases stress and strain on the muscles, ligaments, discs and nerves in the spine. This additional stress and strain leads to pain, tension, numbness and tingling, and headaches. All of these symptoms can be attributed to Text Neck. One of the injuries that routinely surfaces from Text Neck is Upper Crossed Syndrome. Human beings are meant to have an erect upright posture.
